Nearby Attractions
You can reach the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Steam Railway (https://www.lakesiderailway.co.uk/) and the Lakeland Motor Museum (https://www.lakelandmotormuseum.co.uk/) safely on foot via an underpass. Turn left from the cottage and walk along the road until you see a footpath sign on the right. Walk down here, through the underpass, then turn right to cross a footbridge over the River Leven.
In Haverthwaite, there is also Cliffhanger Escape Rooms https://www.cliffhangerrooms.co.uk/
At the South East edge of Lake Windermere is Fell Foot Park which is owned by the National Trust https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/fell-foot
For a wonderful view of Lake Windermere, the short climb to the top of Gummer’s How is worthwhile. Take the road on the right just past Fell Foot. There is a car park on the right and the route up is fairly straightforward but with some rocky parts to make it exciting.
About 10 minutes away by car is the Stott Park Bobbin Mill run by English Heritage. Admission is by guided tour (which usually puts us off places!) but this is so well done and interesting for both adults snd children. Check opening times because they are limited.
Local Playgrounds
There is a good playground at the station at Haverthwaite - and you get to watch the trains! If you follow the road up from the Angler’s Arms in Haverthwaite, there is another playground and a field for ball games etc. For more exciting play opportunities, the playground at Grizedale Forest is brilliant. Grizedale also has miles of walking trails, Go-Ape, bike hire and often a Gruffalo trail or similar. https://www.forestryengland.uk/grizedale
Cascades Leisure Club at the Whitewater Hotel (just across the A590) - 5 minutes walk.
The Cascades Leisure Club offers day passes for non-members. The price is £15 for an adult, £10 for child. Under 3s are free. (As at January 2023.)
Facilities include: An indoor heated swimming pool, Sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, Elemis spa, well equipped and air conditioned gymnasium, fitness and dance studio, squash and tennis court. The spacious, air conditioned gymnasium is equipped with the latest resistance and “cross training” cardiovascular exercise facilities. Please check their website as, unlike almost everything else mentioned on our website, we haven’t personally tried this out!
Eating and Drinking
Within walking distance, there are 2 cafes which serve breakfast, lunch and food throughout the day. (The tearoom at Haverthwaite Station https://www.lakesiderailway.co.uk/haverthwaite-tea-room-winter/) and Cafe Ambio at the Lakeland Motor Museum. The Angler’s Arms is across the road from Haverthwaite station (so less than a mile away) and there is a footpath from Lynwood (details in information book at Lynwood). Close by, also, is the Rusland Pool Hotel. (2 miles) and The Swan at Newby Bridge (just over a mile).
