Local Area Information

We love Backbarrow because it has wonderful, local countryside walks from the door of the cottage but is also close enough to the high fells and lakes of Lakeland as well as picturesque villages such as Coniston and Hawkshead.

Turn right out of the cottage front door and just past Hebron Hall is a footpath that takes you up onto the local fell - ideal for a quick evening’s walk. Turn left out of the cottage door, walk along to the end of Brow Edge Road and footpaths lead to Bigland Tarn and Bigland Barrow. Both are about one and a half miles from the house. Children will love the ‘look out’ on the top of Bigland Barrow.

Haverthwaite Station (from where steam trains run to Lakeside on Windermere) is within walking distance of the cottage via the underpass under the A590. Turn left from the house, walk along Brow Edge Road until you reach ‘Trundle Brow’. Turn down the footpath here to go under the main road. On the other side, turn left to cross the river and left again at the other side of the river.

For a longer walk directly from the cottage, look in the ‘Information for Visitors’ book in the cottage.
