Walks from the door

Please note:

This section of the website is a work in progress. Please let us know if you do the walks and can make any amendments.

Please use the personalised ‘Lynwood Cottage’ Ordnance Survey map in the cottage for more guidance.

Walk 1

Turn right out of the cottage front door and just past Hebron Hall is a footpath that takes you up onto the local fell - when you reach a wall, turn right and follow footpath alongside wall until you see a turning on the right which will take you back to Brow Edge Road. Turn right to follow this downhill back to Lynwood Cottage. Ideal for a quick evening’s walk as less than a mile. Can be muddy!

Walk 2

Turn left out of the cottage door, walk along to the end of Brow Edge Road (quite uphill!) and footpaths lead to Bigland Tarn and Bigland Barrow. Both are about one and a half miles from the house. Please have a look at the Lynwood Cottage OS map for more details.

Walk 3

Total distance just over 1 mile on usual quiet roads and pavement.

For a walk around Backbarrow/Haverthwaite on quiet roads, turn left out of cottage, walk up road. Just past ‘Beware children playing’ sign you will see a footpath (by Takamuna) saying ‘Lower Haverthwaite 1/2 mile. This takes you through the underpass under the A590. When you come out of the underpass, turn left and follow path beside river, then crossing river on footbridge. On the other side of the river, turn left to join the road.

Turn right for circular walk back to Lynwood: follow road past Backbarrow Ironworks information panel and old buildings beside the river. When you come to junction with Finsthwaite Lane, either walk under arch and back to A590 or continue along Finsthwaite Lane with river on your right, past Old Post Office House and turn in by sign on tour right ‘Leven View 43-49.

(If you continue a little bit further up Finsthwaite Lane, there is a house with an ‘Honesty Cake Cupboard’)

Soon you will see a footbridge back across the river. Cross on this and follow road passing Cliffhanger Rooms on your left. At junction, turn left back to A590 and cross with care back into Brow Edge Road.

Walk 4

If you want to get to the station ( https://www.lakesiderailway.co.uk ) or the Angler’s Arms (https://anglersarmshaverthwaite.co.uk) follow the road left instead of right after you cross the river. You can return to Lynwood from the Anglers Arms through the woods (check the OS map in the cottage for route)

Walk 5

You can walk to Newby Bridge across the fell and along a quiet road. Start out on the same route as Walk 1 but when you reach the wall, continue uphill on footpath through the trees until you meet a bridleway. Turn left onto this and follow it for just over half a mile until you reach a road. Turn left to walk down to Newby Bridge where you will find the Swan Hotel and Newby Bridge Inn.

From here, you can walk to Lakeside along the newly constructed Windermere Way for a return train ride to Haverthwaite (if you time it right) or you can return to Lynwood on quiet roads on the other side of the river and A590. (Again, have a look at the OS map for more detail)

The walk from the cottage to Newby Bridge and back is about 6 miles in total.

Walk 6

In the ‘Information for Visitors’ folder in the house, is a longer (9mile) walk taken from Country Walking magazine that passes right by Lynwood. We haven’t tried this out yet but it is on our list to do! We think it needs dry weather.
